I recently purchased some hand dyed locks from you, what the HECK do I do with them now?
- We recently set up a mini pictorial for you on FLICKR!
if you have any questions about working with them just contact us. you will find they are fun to work with.
Remember.. not all yarn HAS to be smoth and even. sometimes thick n thin and nubby yarns are SO much fun! Are your Feet Sheets™ hand knit or machine knit TOP
Our Feet Sheets are indeed machine knit.
I load the yarn onto my hand propelled knitting machine.
This makes them more cost effective than is I were to knit them, because there is no way I could do it with the worsening of my Carpel Tunel. Signing up for Clubs TOP

Just how do I set the twist of my handspun Bamboo yarn TOP
Many people ask us this and I have to say first of all
DO NOT boil your yarn.
Yes it is cellouse (plant fiber), however since bamboo has no "memory"
you can set the twist in tepid water, or even cool water.
seriously!
The reason that you dont want to boil it is because of the inital process which made it into top. most cellouse fibers will have a wax or outer layer on their fiber cuticle, not bamboo (that was removed during the fiber prep process).
So with other plant fibers yes you will need to boil, simply to remove the wax residue.
Now that being said, because if the make up of cellouse fibers, it is possible some dyes may leech out during setting the twist. However this dye remant will not change the color of your fibers.
This is due to the fact that in order to stop the chemical reaction (dyeing), it is necessary I rinse the fibers with COLD water first.
Fiber reactive dyes will not continue their dying action once the soda ash remnant is removed.
I rinse til the cows come home, however if you see a small color "leech" dont worry one bit. Your yarn will remain colorfast (because the chemical reaction has been completly halted)!
NOW...
after you set the twist in your tepid water, I highly recommed 2 more rinses.
the first: Hot!
the second: Cold
(you can either stop at 2 or repeat as necessary)
This is what I call shock rinsing. the alternating between hot and cold quickly opens and closes the cuticle of the fiber. This helps ensure the color is locked in and your final yarn will remain colorfast.
After you have knit or crocheted your handspun bamboo yarn into its final form.
I ALWAYS recommend washing in cold, this ensures that the fiber cuticle remain closed. This also helps to keep the natural sheen of the fiber and helps to ensure the life of your garment.
And always lay flat to dry. |
